Trips Risk Assessment

Long ago, a trips risk assessment was never a part of any educational trips. Parents were never guaranteed  their children’s safety. They only could rely on their trust of their teacher’s natural instinct on spotting possible dangers.

But the world has now changed. More and more parents are becoming paranoid or more concerned because of our ever changing environment and parents need assurance that the trip will be safe. And so, a trips risk assessment should always be included before the trip. It may not be required for the schools, but having a risk assessment should give some give relief to the parents.  If my daughter were in elementary school, I would be more relaxed and more willing to allow her to travel with the school and here teacher if a trip risk assessment was in place.

 Third Party Risk

The assessment is done by a third-party and reputable company. The company will send a representative to the places that will be visited for the educational tour. The risk probability will be measured depending upon certain factors like the presence of enough fire extinguishers and physical durability of buildings, location, time of day, weather, and so on…

Each company has certain standards on measuring and assessing the risk. Their assessments are typically available on a detailed and summarized version. Parents can get the copy of either of these two upon request.

 Risk Assessment

The detailed assessment may be quite overwhelming to understand. That is why only the summarized version might be the usual request by parents. This will have important points about the safety of those places. Most importantly, it has the calculation of how safe the places are based on percentage. Some, however, will only give either of the two valued—safe or not safe.  This process may be better for parents interested in the bottom line, whether the site is safe or not.

 A Necessity

The trips risk assessment may not be necessary anymore if the school has already assessed the places. But it is highly necessary for trips abroad and to another state.  With this assessment, parents are becoming more and more at ease that their children will have a safe tour and will go back home safe and sound. Having a trips risk assessment may be an added financial burden for parents but the relief it can give is always priceless.

Thirty Years Ago

Children walking to school thirty years ago had little worry regarding risk, let alone going on field trips to various locations during the school year.  That has all changed.  Risk for our children is and will be our priority as parents until we are no longer on this planet.
